I believe that modern software is about the mechanization of a business process, and implementation decisions should be focused on giving businesses a tailored blend of efficiency and long-term flexibility. The primary role of a lead developer is not to deliver ad hoc features, but to avoid unacceptable failure, tailor code to changes in the business model, and advise on when and where to trade technical debt for speed and cost savings.
